Viral Fever in August: When to Wait, and When to Get Tested

Gurugram's August brings a wave of fevers, and most of them are simple viral illnesses that settle in three or four days. Testing on day one usually adds cost, not clarity.

Wait and Watch — Usually Safe

Fever under 101°F for one to two days, with a cold, sore throat or body ache, in an otherwise healthy adult. Paracetamol, fluids, rest.

    Get Tested If

    • Fever crosses day 3 without improving
    • Temperature above 102°F, or with rigors and chills
    • Severe joint pain, rash, or bleeding gums
    • Vomiting, unable to keep fluids down
    • Breathlessness, chest pain or confusion
    • Burning urination or one-sided flank pain
    • You are diabetic, pregnant, elderly or on immunosuppressants — test early, don't wait
    • The patient is a young child with poor feeding or lethargy

What a Sensible Fever Panel Includes

    • CBC — the workhorse; platelet count, white cell pattern
    • Dengue NS1 (days 1–5) or IgM (after day 5)
    • Malaria antigen and smear
    • Typhoid — Widal or, better, blood culture
    • Urine routine and CRP
    • Chest X-ray if there is a cough or breathlessness

See our monsoon fever panel guide and chikungunya vs dengue for the details.

    Please Avoid

Self-prescribed antibiotics for a viral fever, and ibuprofen or aspirin until dengue is ruled out.

Book a fever panel with home sample collection — most reports the same day.
