Breathless on the Stairs? What a PFT Test in Gurugram Actually Tells You

Gurugram's air quality and long commutes mean breathing complaints are common — and often ignored until climbing two flights of stairs becomes hard. A PFT (Pulmonary Function Test) is the simplest objective way to measure lung capacity.

What a PFT Measures

• FVC — the total air you can forcefully exhale
• FEV1 — how much of that comes out in the first second
• FEV1/FVC ratio — distinguishes obstructive (asthma, COPD) from restrictive patterns
• PEFR — peak flow, useful in asthma monitoring

Who Should Get a PFT

• Long-standing cough, wheeze or breathlessness
• Known or suspected asthma or COPD
• Current and former smokers
• Pre-operative assessment before surgery
• Occupational exposure to dust, fumes or chemicals
• Follow-up after a serious chest infection

How to Prepare

• Avoid heavy meals 2 hours before the test
• Skip smoking for at least 6 hours
• Ask your doctor whether to pause inhalers before the test
• Wear loose clothing that doesn't restrict the chest

The test takes 15–20 minutes. You breathe into a spirometer through a mouthpiece with a nose clip, repeating the effort a few times so the best reading is recorded.

What Happens Next
