Section 80D: How to Claim ₹5,000 for Your Family's Preventive Health Checkup

Quick answer: Under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act, you can deduct up to ₹5,000 a year for preventive health checkups for yourself, your spouse, dependent children and parents. This ₹5,000 is part of — not in addition to — your overall 80D limit of ₹25,000 (₹50,000 if the person is a senior citizen). It is available under the old tax regime only, and unlike health insurance premiums, a preventive checkup can be paid in cash and still qualify. Keep the invoice.

Many salaried professionals in Gurugram buy health insurance for the 80D deduction but forget that a preventive health checkup counts too. If you have already planned an annual checkup for yourself or your parents, it costs nothing extra to claim it.

What Exactly Does Section 80D Allow?

Section 80D gives a deduction for:

    • Health insurance premiums for yourself, spouse, dependent children and parents
    • Preventive health checkups — up to ₹5,000 per year in total for the family
    • Medical expenditure for senior citizen parents who are not covered by any health insurance

    The Limits, Simply Explained

    • Self, spouse and dependent children: up to ₹25,000 per year (₹50,000 if you or your spouse is 60 or older)
    • Parents: an additional up to ₹25,000 per year (₹50,000 if either parent is 60 or older)
    • Preventive health checkup: up to ₹5,000 within these limits — you can split it across yourself and your parents

Example: You pay ₹20,000 for your family health insurance and ₹3,000 for your own full body checkup. Your total claim for "self and family" is ₹23,000 — within the ₹25,000 limit. You also pay ₹2,000 for your father's checkup: that can be claimed under the parents' limit, as long as the combined preventive checkup amount for everyone stays within ₹5,000.

    Who Can Claim It?

    • Individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs)
    • Taxpayers who file under the old tax regime — the new default regime does not allow 80D deductions
    • The checkup can be for yourself, your spouse, your dependent children and your parents (parents need not be dependent)

    Can I Pay in Cash?

Yes. This is the one part of Section 80D where cash is allowed. Insurance premiums must be paid by any mode other than cash; preventive health checkup payments can be made in cash, by UPI, card or net banking.

What Counts as a "Preventive Health Checkup"?

The law does not list specific tests. In practice, routine screening tests and packages — blood count, sugar, cholesterol, liver, kidney, thyroid, vitamin levels, urine tests, ECG and chest X-ray done as part of a preventive check — are treated as preventive health checkups. Tests done to diagnose an illness you are already being treated for are medical expenses, not "preventive" checkups.

If you're unsure which package to choose, our full body checkup price guide compares Aarvak's ₹1,000, ₹2,000 and ₹3,000 panels — all three fit within the ₹5,000 limit.

    Documents to Keep

    • The invoice or receipt from the lab, in the name of the person paying, showing the date and amount
    • The name of the person tested (yourself, spouse, child or parent)
    • Payment proof if paid digitally (useful but not mandatory for cash)

You don't attach these to your return, but keep them for at least six years in case the Income Tax Department asks.

How to Claim It in Your Return or With Your Employer

    • Salaried employees: submit the invoice to your employer's payroll team during investment declaration (usually January–March) so lower TDS is deducted
    • While filing your ITR: enter the amount under Section 80D in the deductions schedule, choosing the right category (self/family or parents)

Is the ₹5,000 preventive health checkup deduction over and above ₹25,000?

Yes. Aarvak Diagnostics provides an invoice for every test and package, which you can use for your Section 80D claim.
