Fasting for Janmashtami With Diabetes: How to Keep Your Sugars Safe

Festive fasting creates two opposite risks in the same day: low sugar during the fast, and a sharp spike after it. Both are avoidable.

    Before You Decide to Fast

Get a current picture rather than guessing:

    • Fasting Blood Sugar and HbA1c — your baseline and 3-month control
    • Kidney Function Test — dehydration during fasting is harder on stressed kidneys
    • Talk to your doctor about medication timing, especially sulfonylureas and insulin

Do not fast without medical advice if you are on insulin, have had a hypo in the last three months, are pregnant, or have kidney disease.

    During the Fast

    • Drink water through the day — a fast is not a dry fast for most people
    • Check your sugar at least twice, and any time you feel shaky, sweaty or confused
    • Keep glucose tablets or sugar within reach and use them at the first symptom
    • Don't combine fasting with a heavy workout

    The Vrat Plate Problem

Sabudana, potato, singhare ka atta and fruit are almost entirely carbohydrate. Balance it:

    • Add curd, paneer or peanuts for protein
    • Choose fruit over fruit juice
    • Keep sabudana khichdi to one small bowl, not a plateful
    • Sweets: one piece, with a meal, not on an empty stomach

    After the Festival

Recheck fasting sugar and HbA1c two to three weeks later if you fasted for several days. Attending the Janmashtami celebration at ISKCON Gurugram? Our medical room on site can check your sugar free of charge.
